The situation. GlobalFoundries, the former manufacturing arm of AMD, is one of two wafer fabricators in the world able to design, develop and manufacture in-house at scale, with more than 150 customers, over 10,000 employees in twelve locations and manufacturing in Germany, the United States and, through Chartered Semiconductor, Singapore. Its Singapore operation links to sales and support offices in Taiwan and Japan.
The challenge. A small number of customers, each needing slightly different products, and a fabrication process where a decision once made is hard to reverse. Delays or a product that misses the market cost years. Management needed accurate, current information on technology developments, material pricing and the market, delivered quickly on a variety of platforms, including mobile.
The evaluation. GlobalFoundries ranked its requirements: graphical presentation first, comprehensive information second, and consultants able to develop to its standards quickly third. It looked at solutions from SAP, Microsoft and Oracle before choosing KMS on product quality, service and overall value.
What KMS built. Qlik scorecards and dashboards on SAP R3, Oracle R12, PeopleSoft 9.1 and SiView, with Oracle 10g underneath. A team of four KMS consultants and fifteen champions inside GlobalFoundries built a dashboard for every business division. The first application was fully deployed within two months, and more than twenty were added over the following two years.
"We needed real-time business data, on the go. To make quick decisions, it had to be quick to learn. It is easier and more effective to choose KMS. The greatest advantages are the quality of the deliverables, its clarity, and the robustness of the software." — Srinivasan Rangaswamy, Practice Manager of Business Intelligence, GlobalFoundries Singapore
Results. More than a thousand employees use the applications, from manufacturing and procurement to sales and HR. Management works with nine years of history and projects three years ahead, and the information is used to find where the company can add value for its customers.
